Methodology, software & labs

How you'll learn

100% online training on the SEIUM campus, with downloadable material, recorded classes and an assigned technical tutor. There are no fixed timetables: you progress at your own pace within the intake, so it can be combined with work.

Each module combines theory, guided reading of the original standard and applied exercises. The working software is SOFiSTiK, MIDAS Civil, ANSYS Mechanical, LUSAS Bridge and MATLAB, in free, academic or evaluation versions. Testing is studied through real procedures for dynamic analysis with HSLM trains, static and dynamic load testing of bridges and track-structure interaction studies. Assessment is continuous by module, plus the final project.

Standards covered: EN 1991-2, EN 1990 Annex A2, IAPF-07, UIC 774-3, EN 1993-1-9, EN 1992-2, EN 1994-2.

Assigned technical tutor:every module ends with a deliverable that your tutor marks individually.
Standards-based learning:guided reading of EN 1991-2, EN 1990 Annex A2, IAPF-07 and UIC 774-3 applied to real cases.
Industry software:SOFiSTiK, MIDAS Civil, ANSYS Mechanical, LUSAS Bridge and MATLAB, in free, academic or evaluation versions.
Final project:the preliminary design of a railway bridge, from type selection and loads to dynamic analysis, track-structure interaction and section design, reviewed by your tutor.
Flexible format:100% online, no fixed timetables, compatible with full-time work.
Capstone project

Build it end to end

Your final project follows the real engineering workflow, step by step, reviewed by your tutor.

LM71 force envelopes
Calculate internal force envelopes for a deck under the LM71 load model.
Dynamic deck analysis
Run a dynamic analysis of a simply supported deck with HSLM trains and check accelerations.
Deformation limit states
Verify deflection, twist and end-rotation limit states, including track-structure interaction.
Composite deck fatigue check
Check a composite deck for fatigue using the λ-coefficient method.
Final project
Deliver the preliminary design of a railway bridge with structural model, critical sections, general drawings and inspection plan.
