Surface Roughness in Restored Components Course
Online 300-hour course in surface roughness for restored components. 6 modules covering ISO 21920-1 (specification of profile surface texture), ISO 21920-2 (profile texture parameters) and Mitutoyo SURFPAK. Dedicated tutor and open enrolment.
Take the controls.
Run a real engineering trade-off from this programme. Move the sliders, watch the model react in real time and beat the challenge.
What you will be able to do
Explain the influence of surface texture on the function of components.
Measure roughness parameters with profilometers and analyse profiles.
Relate finishing processes to the roughness obtained.
Specify the finish of cylinders, crankpins and valve seats.
Prepare surfaces for coatings with the appropriate roughness.
Interpret texture indications on technical drawings.
Implement a roughness control system in the restoration workshop.

How you'll learn
100% online training on the SEIUM campus, with downloadable material, recorded classes and a dedicated technical tutor. No fixed timetables: students progress at their own pace within the intake, which makes it possible to combine study with work.
Each module combines theory, guided reading of the original standard and applied exercises. The working software is Mitutoyo SURFPAK, MountainsMap, advanced Excel, Minitab, in free, academic or evaluation versions. Tests are studied using real measurement procedures with a stylus profilometer, control of cylinder honing, and comparison with reference specimens. Assessment is continuous by module plus the final integrating project.
Build it end to end
Your final project follows the real engineering workflow, step by step, reviewed by your tutor.

Frequently asked questions
The programme comprises 300 hours in total, spread over 3 to 5 months. That is an average of 10 to 15 hours per week, compatible with a full-time job.
You will work with Mitutoyo SURFPAK, MountainsMap, advanced Excel and Minitab. Free, academic or evaluation versions are used, and the tutor will indicate the free alternative where one exists.
A SEIUM own diploma upon passing the continuous assessment and the integrating project. It is in-house training, not an official title from the Ministry.
Yes. Modules passed in a course or postgraduate diploma in the same area are credited towards the advanced programme. Check the credit transfer policy when you enrol.
