Postgraduate Diploma in Vibrations, Fluid-Structure Coupling and Noise
Online 800-hour Postgraduate Diploma in Vibrations, Fluid-Structure Coupling and Noise. 8 modules covering ISO 20283-5 (ship vibration: habitability on passenger and cargo ships), Resolution MSC.337(91) (Code on Noise Levels on Board Ships) and MSC Nastran. Assigned tutor and open enrolment.
Take the controls.
Run a real engineering trade-off from this field. Move the sliders, watch the model react in real time and beat the challenge.
What you will be able to do
Explain the structural dynamics of the hull and its natural modes.
Carry out numerical modal analyses using finite elements.
Estimate excitations from the propeller and machinery.
Model fluid-structure interaction and added mass.
Assess onboard noise levels against IMO limits.
Analyse underwater radiated noise and reduction measures.
Plan vibration measurements and vibration control solutions.

How you'll learn
100% online training on the SEIUM campus, with downloadable material, recorded classes and an assigned technical tutor. No fixed timetable: students progress at their own pace within the intake, which makes it easy to combine with work.
Each module combines theory, guided reading of the original standard and applied exercises. The software used is MSC Nastran, ANSYS Mechanical, Simcenter 3D, Actran, MATLAB, in free, academic or evaluation versions. Tests are studied using real procedures for experimental modal analysis, vibration measurement during sea trials and underwater radiated noise campaigns. Assessment is continuous, module by module, plus the final integrative project.
Build it end to end
Your final project follows the real engineering workflow, step by step, reviewed by your tutor.
Explain the structural dynamics of the hull and its natural modes.
Carry out numerical modal analyses using finite elements.
Estimate excitations from the propeller and machinery.
Model fluid-structure interaction and added mass.
Assess onboard noise levels against IMO limits.

Frequently asked questions
The programme consists of 800 hours in total, spread over 6 to 8 months. That is an average of 10 to 15 hours per week, compatible with a full-time job.
The programme works with MSC Nastran, ANSYS Mechanical, Simcenter 3D, Actran and MATLAB. Free, academic or evaluation versions are used, and the tutor indicates the free alternative where one exists.
An SEIUM own diploma upon passing the continuous assessment and the integrative project. It is in-house training, not an official qualification from the Ministry.
Yes. Modules passed in a course or postgraduate diploma in the same area are recognised towards the advanced programme. Check the recognition policy when you enrol.
