Methodology, software & labs

How you'll learn

A 100% online programme on the SEIUM campus, with downloadable material, recorded classes and an assigned technical tutor. There are no fixed timetables: you progress at your own pace within each intake, so you can combine it with your job.

Each module combines theory, guided reading of the original standard and applied exercises. The working software is ROS 2, Gazebo, NVIDIA Isaac Sim, Nav2 and CloudCompare, in free, academic or evaluation versions. Exercises are based on real procedures: autonomous navigation in a simulated tunnel, a mobility test over standard obstacles and the design of an underground communications network. Assessment is continuous by module, plus the final project.

Standards covered: ISO 8373, ISO 13482, ISO 10218-1, ASTM E2826, Directive 2014/34/EU ATEX, IEEE 1873-2015, IEC 61508.

Assigned technical tutor:every module ends with a deliverable that your tutor marks individually.
Standards-based learning:guided reading of ISO 8373, ISO 13482, ISO 10218-1, ASTM E2826 and the ATEX Directive applied to real cases, not as a theoretical annex.
Industry software:ROS 2, Gazebo, NVIDIA Isaac Sim, Nav2 and CloudCompare, in free, academic or evaluation versions.
Final project:an autonomous robotic system for an underground mission, from platform and sensors to localisation, communications and test plan, reviewed by your tutor.
Flexible format:100% online, no fixed timetables, compatible with full-time work.
Capstone project

Build it end to end

Your final project follows the real engineering workflow, step by step, reviewed by your tutor.

Mission and platform
Define the underground mission and select a suitable robotic platform.
Sensors and localisation
Design the sensor architecture and a GNSS-denied localisation system.
Planning and communications
Configure planning and control with Nav2 and design the underground communications network.
Test plan
Plan mobility and autonomy tests based on ASTM methods and evaluate the results.
Final project
Present the complete system report for final review with your tutor.
