Course in Digital Substations with IEC 61850
The Digital Substations with IEC 61850 Course offers comprehensive training in the implementation and management of digital systems in electrical substations. It focuses on the IEC 61850 standard, covering communication protocols, configuration of smart devices and system architecture. It includes practice in simulation, equipment configuration and troubleshooting, with an emphasis on the automation and protection of modern substations, linked to cybersecurity, remote monitoring and the integration of renewable energy. It focuses on analysing system functionality, its integration with energy control systems and the configuration of protection relays.
The course enables you to acquire skills in the design, implementation and maintenance of digital substations, using simulation and analysis tools, and laboratories with real equipment for hands-on experience. It prepares professionals for roles such as protection and control engineers, automation systems engineers and substation technicians, increasing their employability in the energy and electrical sector, in line with industry standards and current regulations. It focuses on the latest trends in substation automation and power transmission.

How you'll learn
100 % online training on the SEIUM Institute campus, with downloadable material, recorded classes and an assigned technical tutor. There are no fixed timetables: students progress at their own pace within the enrolment period, which makes it possible to combine the course with work.
Each module combines theory, guided reading of the original standard and applied exercises. The working software is Helinks STS, OMICRON StationScout, Wireshark, DIGSI 5, IEDScout, in free, academic or evaluation versions. Practical work covers real procedures for editing and validating SCL files, capturing and analysing GOOSE messages, and the test plan for a digital bay. Assessment is continuous by module, plus the final integrating project.
Build it end to end
Your final project follows the real engineering workflow, step by step, reviewed by your tutor.
Understand the digital substation architecture.
