Course in Extreme Risk Models in Reinsurance
Online 300-hour course in extreme risk models in reinsurance. 6 modules covering Directive 2009/138/EC (Solvency II, VaR at 99.5%), Delegated Regulation (EU) 2015/35 (catastrophe risk) and R (evd, extRemes). Assigned tutor and open enrolment.
Take the controls.
Run a real engineering trade-off from this field. Move the sliders, watch the model react in real time and beat the challenge.
What you will be able to do
Explain the statistical problem of extreme events.
Apply extreme value theory with GEV and GPD distributions.
Interpret the results of commercial catastrophe models.
Model dependence and aggregation with copulas.
Calculate risk measures such as VaR and TVaR in the tail.
Validate and govern extreme risk models.
Develop an extreme risk modelling project for a reinsurance programme.

How you'll learn
Fully 100% online training on the SEIUM campus, with downloadable material, recorded classes and an assigned technical tutor. There are no fixed timetables: students progress at their own pace within the intake, making it possible to combine with work.
Each module combines theory, guided reading of the original standard and applied exercises. The working software is R (evd, extRemes), Python (SciPy), Moody’s RMS, Verisk Touchstone, Oasis LMF, in free, academic or evaluation versions. Practical work is based on real procedures for fitting heavy-tailed distributions, copula modelling and validation of catastrophe models. Assessment is continuous by module plus the final integrative project.
Build it end to end
Your final project follows the real engineering workflow, step by step, reviewed by your tutor.
Explain the statistical problem of extreme events.
Apply extreme value theory with GEV and GPD distributions.
Interpret the results of commercial catastrophe models.
Model dependence and aggregation with copulas.
Calculate risk measures such as VaR and TVaR in the tail.
Where this takes you

Frequently asked questions
The programme comprises 300 hours in total, spread over 3 to 5 months. That is between 10 and 15 hours per week on average, compatible with a full-time job.
The work is carried out with R (evd, extRemes), Python (SciPy), Moody’s RMS, Verisk Touchstone, Oasis LMF. Free, academic or evaluation versions are used, and the tutor indicates the open-source alternative where one exists.
A SEIUM Institute own diploma upon passing the continuous assessment and the integrative project. It is in-house training, not an official qualification from the Ministry.
Yes. Modules passed in a course or postgraduate diploma in the same area are credited towards the advanced programme. Check the credit transfer policy when you enrol.
