R79 Course: Power-Assisted and Automated Steering Systems
Online course of 300 hours in UN R79: power-assisted and automated steering systems. 6 modules covering steering system architecture, general technical requirements, automated steering functions (ACSF, CSF, ESF, RCP), functional safety and complex electronic systems, and validation and type-approval testing, with an assigned technical tutor.
Take the controls.
Run a real engineering trade-off from this field. Move the sliders, watch the model react in real time and beat the challenge.
What you will be able to do
Understand the architecture of power-assisted, electric and steer-by-wire steering systems.
Interpret the technical requirements of UN R79 and its series of amendments.
Distinguish the ACSF categories and the CSF, ESF and RCP functions.
Apply ISO 26262 and ISO 21448 to automated steering systems.
Prepare complex electronic systems documentation for the audit.
Plan physical and virtual validation tests of steering functions.
Draw up a type-approval file for a steering system.

How you'll learn
100% online study on the SEIUM campus, with downloadable material, recorded classes and an assigned technical tutor. There are no fixed timetables: you progress at your own pace within each intake, so the programme fits around your job.
Each module combines theory, guided reading of the original regulations and applied exercises. The working software is MATLAB/Simulink, IPG CarMaker, Vector CANoe, dSPACE ASM and VI-CarRealTime, in free, academic or evaluation versions. Practical work is based on real procedures: lane-keeping tests on the proving ground, audits of complex electronic systems and validation of steering functions through simulation. Assessment is continuous, module by module, plus the final project.
Standards covered: UN Regulation No. 79 (UN R79); Regulation (EU) 2018/858; ISO 26262:2018; Regulation (EU) 2019/2144; ISO 21448:2022 (SOTIF); UN Regulation No. 155 (UN R155); UN Regulation No. 156 (UN R156); UN Regulation No. 157 (UN R157).
Build it end to end
Your final project follows the real engineering workflow, step by step, reviewed by your tutor.
