Grid-forming in Energy Storage Systems Course
Online 300-hour course in grid-forming for energy storage systems. 6 modules covering Regulation (EU) 2016/631 (generator connection requirements), IEEE 2800-2022 (inverter-based resources in transmission) and MATLAB/Simulink. Tutor assigned and enrolment open.
Take the controls.
Run a real engineering trade-off from this programme. Move the sliders, watch the model react in real time and beat the challenge.
What you will be able to do
Explain why reduced inertia requires grid-forming converters.
Compare droop, VSM and synchronising power control strategies.
Analyse the stability of grid-forming converters in weak grids.
Size converter overcapacity and energy reserve for stability services.
Interpret the grid-forming requirements of different operators.
Model and validate controllers using EMT and HIL simulation.
Specify a grid-forming BESS for a real network case.

How you'll learn
100 % online training on the SEIUM campus, with downloadable material, recorded classes and assigned technical tutor. No fixed timetable: students progress at their own pace within the intake, which makes it possible to combine with work.
Each module combines theory, guided reading of the original standard and applied exercises. Working software includes MATLAB/Simulink, PSCAD, DIgSILENT PowerFactory, RTDS, PLECS, in free, academic or evaluation versions. Testing is studied through real EMT simulation procedures for phase jumps and voltage dips, HIL tests of grid-forming controllers, and technical specification for tenders. Assessment is continuous per module plus the final integrating project.
Build it end to end
Your final project follows the real engineering workflow, step by step, reviewed by your tutor.
Explain why reduced inertia requires grid-forming converters.
Compare droop, VSM and synchronising power control strategies.
Analyse the stability of grid-forming converters in weak grids.
Size converter overcapacity and energy reserve for stability services.
Interpret the grid-forming requirements of different operators.

Frequently asked questions
The programme comprises 300 total hours spread over 3 to 5 months. That is between 10 and 15 hours per week on average, compatible with a full-time job.
You work with MATLAB/Simulink, PSCAD, DIgSILENT PowerFactory, RTDS, PLECS. Free, academic or evaluation versions are used, and the tutor indicates the free alternative where one exists.
SEIUM Institute's own diploma upon passing continuous assessment and the final integrating project. It is in-house training, not an official Ministry qualification.
Yes. Modules passed in a course or Postgraduate Diploma in the same area are recognised towards the higher-level programme. Check the recognition policy when you enrol.
